Why upgrade from Umbraco v7 or v8?

Contrary to what is often believed, an "upgrade" from Umbraco v7 or v8 is actually a "migration" of your website to Umbraco 13. The reasons for this are multiple:

  • After v8, the technology changes from .NET Framework to NET Core.
  • Functionality will become obsolete or is marked for becoming obsolete (legacy image pickers, grids, nested content etc.)
  • Custom code needs rewriting for NET Core.
  • The Umbraco database does not upgrade.
  • Development practices used for older versions are now legacy and have been replaced with new practices (e.g. content blocks over sub-nodes for content)

How does DotSee migrate your website?

Every site is different, so the first thing we do is examine your website and identify the complexity and effort needed to upgrade.

After determining the number of elements on your website that need to be migrated, we provide you with a cost and time estimate.

If there is agreement, we then apply the following steps:

  • Create a new, empty v13 website 
  • Create new structures (block grids, block lists, and everything else required) on the new website
  • Migrate data from the old web site to the new one, converting data to fit the new structures
  • Rewrite code in views to fit the new structures, keeping the layout intact.
  • Rewrite custom code (if any) to be compatible with NET Core.

What happens with my website while the Umbraco upgrade is being developed?

The whole process is done on isolated development environments in a repeatable way, meaning that you don't have to apply a "content freeze" on your current website while the process is under development. You can use your site normally while the upgrade is underway.

You can access everything on a staging website to check and verify that the migration is precisely as needed.

When everything is ready, you provide a fresh copy of the database and media, and the final upgrade runs, minimizing downtime and reducing "content freeze" to a minimum.

How do I get my discount?

Your discount is applied to your estimated cost after you select an one-, or two-year support and development plan for your website. The higher the duration and plan, the higher the discount.

1. We estimate the upgrade cost

Our engineers will access your website to identify what needs to be migrated and provide you with a cost and time estimate.

The estimate will be valid even if you don't choose to sign up for one of our Umbraco support plans.

2. You sign up to one of our Yearly Plans 

Our Umbraco support plans offer unlimited support for P1/P2 incidents with SLA, monthly or bimonthly website health checks, proactive support, and retained hours for development (addition of new features or improvements on existing functionality). You can find all information about our Yearly Plans here

3. You get a discount on the upgrade cost

You can choose between the Yearly 1 and Yearly 2 plans. Discounts are based on your choice of plan and its duration.

Yearly 1 for one year gives you a 12% discount while Yearly 1 for two years gives you a 25% discount.

Yearly 2 for one year gives you a 25% discount while Yearly 2 for two years gives you a 50% discount.

When you select the Yearly 2 plan for a period of three years or more, we will carefully examine the estimate for upgrading your web site and apply the best possible discount - starting with 50% onwards. If your website is eligible, you may get an upgrade at an even lower price - or even for free.
